FotoSketcher Review - Turn Your Photos into Art with Zero Effort

When I was a kid, each time I went to the seaside there was an artist that was drawing you a portrait using a pencil. I was always fascinated by both the talent of the artist and people who had a lot of patience to stay still for so many minutes.

Years flew away, walking by in Greece I found an automatic photo booth machine. It was not the regular one (for passports or other IDs) you can find in most airports or malls but a fun one who attracted quite a lot of people. You would've inserted 2 Euros to take a photo and print it. It aimed to replicate that artist, so the only "effect" was a pencil sketch. I took one with my little daughter. I still have it after so many years.

I think it was back in 2013 when I discovered FotoSketcher. After a few attempts with Adobe Photoshop, I was looking for software that could apply some effects.

FotoSketcher doesn’t require you to have any drawing skills. It takes regular photos and spits out pencil sketches, oil paintings, and watercolours that people might think you paid a graphic designer for.

Description

Long story short, FotoSketcher lets you turn digital photos into artwork. That’s it. But it does it really well. You take a photo, load it up, click a button and in seconds you’ve got a sketch, a painting, or something else.

FotoSketcher was made by David Thoiron, he's the one who keeps it updated and doesn’t charge a thing. There’s no learning curve (like Photoshop, GIMP or other famous alternatives) - just load, pick, preview, done. It is an amazing app if you want something creative but hate complicated menus or monthly subscriptions.

Category Function What It Does

Control Parameters Sliders for intensity, detail, edges, textures, stroke types

What It’s Like to Use

FotoSketcher interface will load pretty fast.

You get a clean, no-clutter interface and a top bar with icons that make sense. There’s a dropdown for effects, thumbnails for previewing styles, and sliders everywhere.

You don’t need to read any manual - BUT - you might want to check David tips and tricks and maybe the tutorial.

Back to the interface.

You drag in an image, click on a style, move a few sliders, hit “Draw”. The preview gives you live feedback. It even shows you the progress stroke-by-stroke so you feel like something is being handcrafted, even if you’re just sipping coffee and watching.

I would add that it also depends on your machine - mine is quite powerful and everything runs fast.

If you want to see how creative you are, press F5 and mess with the script editor. Or don’t. The software works either way.

You want your cat to look like Van Gogh painted it? Go ahead. Want a black and white pencil sketch of you and beloved one? I did it many times with photos of my family. One click.

Looking to apply the same results to multiple photos? Batch mode’s there.

And yes, the results trick people - I surprised my friends a few times. They’ll think you've did it in Photoshop.

Final Words

FotoSketcher is what you install when you want art without effort (and zero frustration). It’s fun, fast, and free. Currently, it runs on Windows only but I've heard that from David itself that a mac OS version might be released soon. If you like this software and want to encourage David Thoiron to spend more time on its development, a donation would be highly appreciated.
