VLC Media Player

VLC Media Player is the multimedia player that stood the test of time. I tried many of them and back in the days it was competing with Media Player Classic, later to MPC-HC only to see them disappear or see some forks of it such as MPC-BE. VLC Media Player is one of the oldest media players and probably the most popular media player for the past decades. It is not only popular and another open-source project but also the people behind it - the VLC Team managed to keep its reputation clean since its first days - 24 years ago. I witnessed how they created a version for all popular OS and a relentless update process.

So why is this media player so great?

Long story short, it can literally play almost anything that comes as audio or video. The most popular ones such as MP4 or AVI or MKV, MP3, FLAC etc. - including some rare old file types that many other players can't open.

Also, if you're an old guy as I am, you probably remember the "codecs" days when you needed to download and install them separately, sometimes tweak them, or download separately from another library etc. Truly frustrating, especially on the slow Internet Connections - painful days young people!

Not anymore, with VLC - you don't need to download any extra stuff. It just plays everything you throw at it!

To summarize it, I made a short list with the things I love about it:

• no adware/spyware - trustworthy after 24 years.
• plays almost anything that can be played by a media player
• watch live videos
• you can convert media files (example: convert a .mov into .mp4)
• you can use it to record your screen or even your webcam
• support for subtitle files, including sync them manually
• the ability to play partially or damaged files. etc.

There's a ton of other features and options, some being added or improved over time. If you have never heard about it before and you're reading this for the first time, trust me you won't need another free media player.
