App Description
It is really hard to remember so many passwords - email addresses, social networks, sensitive sites such as your bank account - which requires a certain security level. This is where you need a password manager and please don't run away - using a password safe such as this one is easier than you might think.
What It Does
Password Safe was made by a well known security expert named named Bruce Schneier back in 2002 and it is being developed and maintained by Rony Shapiro. It's super straightforward - just stores all your passwords in one super-locked digital vault.
- It uses some seriously strong protection (something called Twofish - sounds fancy, right?)
- It can create really strong passwords for you - no more using your dog's name! Which is very weak and exposes you to a great risk.
- You can have different password files - like one for work and one for your personal stuff
- It can auto-fill your logins which saves tons of time (some websites will break this but it still works for most websites)
Honestly, it does pretty much what those paid ones like LastPass do, but without costing anything.
How It Looks
Okay, I'll be real with you - it's not winning any beauty contests. It's pretty bare-bones, but that means it's super easy to figure out. You'll get the hang of it in like 2 minutes. No complicated stuff to learn.
Does It Actually Work Well?
It runs super smooth, even on your old laptop. It doesn't crash or freeze up, even when you have tons of passwords saved. And the developers keep updating it to fix any security issues.
The Good and Bad Stuff
Things you'll love:
- It's secure
- Completely free and so easy to use
- Doesn't slow down your computer at all
- You can put it on a USB stick and take it anywhere
- Can handle all your different passwords easily
Things that might bug you:
- It looks like something from 2005 - but I love simple things, yet some people might "complain"
- You have to manually back it up (no automatic cloud saving)
How Does It Compare?
Well, exceptionally well if you think there are paid password managers, doing the exact same thing, with a fancy interface and charges you $40 per year. You do miss out on the automatic syncing between your phone and laptop, though.
Is It Worth It?
It's FREE! Like, completely free forever. That alone makes it awesome. Sure, it doesn't have all the bells and whistles, but for something that costs nothing, it's pretty amazing. I wrote like 10 analogies so far but deleted them.
Who Should Use This?
I think it would be perfect for anyone who struggles with so many passwords but don't want to pay for a password manager. It's super simple but really secure.
The only thing you need to remember! Please read this as it is very important!
Using a password manager is a great idea and it makes your life so easy. However, there's a catch. You still need to memorize/remember one password. This is the password that you're typing in to get access to all the other passwords that you don't have to remember.
*It is called the master password - so whatever you do - make sure you don't forget it!
*If you forget/lose this password - there's no way to recover it. I mean, you can try guessing as much as you please - there is no limit. But, remember to either save it in a high secure place or memorize it.
*This master password rule applies TO ALL PASSWORD MANAGERS - simply put, that's how they were designed.
Bottom Line
Listen, if you just want something that works, keeps your stuff secure, and doesn't cost anything, Password Safe is awesome. It's not flashy, but it gets the job done. I've been using it for the past 15 years and it's made my life so much easier.
